The Golden Brigade of the 82nd Airborne recently commissioned Wendy Yothers, a lecturer with the University of Hawaii at Hilo Art Department, to create an engraved crystal punch bowl with silver cups to complete a suite of works started in 2007 commemorating the unit’s Vietnam service.

The 82nd Airborne was the first unit into Vietnam after the 1968 Tet Offensive.

In conjunction with this project, a residency at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY, will be scheduled for Yothers to fabricate the glasswork. Plans are under way to film this process and to create a documentary with the remaining men of the brigade, their words and reflections on the commissioned ensemble.

At the request of the brigade, UH-Hilo art students will be involved during the coming academic year in the fabrication of the silver cups to complete the commission project, said Michael Marshall, chairman of the UHH Art Department.
